Youth Earn College Cash from the 2016 Farnam Breeders Trust Scholarship Program

Showing Breeders’ Trust-enrolled Paint Horses really paid off for two exhibitors. AjPHA members Mollie Coffin and Lauren Zaddack each received a $1,000 Farnam Breeders’ Trust Youth scholarship from APHA and Farnam Horse Products; additionally, an APHA regional club of their choice each receives $500, courtesy of Farnam.
All AjPHA members automatically receive an “entry” into the Farnam Breeders’ Trust Youth Scholarship program every time they show a Breeders’ Trust-nominated Paint Horse in APHA Youth or Novice Youth classes during the yearlong eligibility period. Entries accumulate per judge, per class, and were collected between April 1, 2015, and March 31, 2016.
Entries were divided into two groups: Youth and Novice Youth classes. One recipient from each group was chosen at random by computer to win a $1,000 Farnam scholarship; each winner then selected an APHA regional club to receive $500 from Farnam to help fund an outreach program to other local youth equine organizations. Once again, APHA tallied more than 66,500 total entries for this year’s contest.
Mollie Coffin, a high-school junior from Marion, Iowa, won the Novice Youth scholarship with Sensational Thunder, a 2004 sorrel overo gelding by Zippos Sensation and out of Zips Painted Buns. “Howie” was bred by Jeri Williams and is owned by Mollie. The young horsewoman chose to present the $500 grant from Farnam to the Iowa Paint Horse Club.
“I am beyond honored to have received this scholarship. I plan on using this scholarship to attend Mount Mercy, a small school here in Iowa to pursue a career in medicine,” Mollie said. “Thank you so much, Farnam, for making this happen, and of course my trainer, Carla Hinton, my parents, and my wonderful horse, Howie, who stand by me through it all. Last year was my first year showing APHA and my first year showing Howie, I am so grateful for all of the opportunities APHA has to offer.”
Lauren Zaddack of Hortonville, Wisconsin, received the Youth division scholarship. Lauren is a recent high school graduate and plans to attend the University of Wisconsin at River Falls to double major in business and animal science. Lauren earned her scholarship aboard Four The Glory, a 2008 sorrel overo gelding by The Ultimate Fancy and out of Peter’s Patti (TB); the gelding was bred by Lisa Beth Novacek of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
“Attaining the Farnam Breeders’ Trust scholarship has allowed me to get a jump-start on paying for my college tuition,” Lauren said. “This is a great opportunity for AjPHA Youth to receive and pay for part of their college. I am looking forward to double majoring in animal science and business starting this fall at UW-River Falls. While in college, I will continue to apply for the several scholarships offered by APHA and APHF.”
Lauren chose to award the additional $500 to the Wisconsin Junior Paint Horse Club. She served as president of the WjPHC last year and hopes the funds will continue to support Youth today and in the future.
Scholarships for the 2016–2017 show season are gathered from all eligible entries generated between April 1, 2016, and March 31, 2017. AjPHA members showing participating Breeders’ Trust-nominated horses automatically earn one entry per class, per judge, in Youth or Novice Youth classes at every APHA-approved show where they exhibit.
