NSBA Past Treasurer and Director, A. George Shaw, Dies

NSBA is saddened to learn of the death of A. George Shaw, of Jensen Beach, Florida. George served as NSBA’s treasurer as well as on the association’s board of directors. He was also a past director of the Florida Quarter Horse Association.

George credited his father, Arthur Shaw, a world-renown Standardbred trainer and driver, for inspiring him in his love and involvement with all things equine. At a young age, he joined the family business of training and racing premier Standardbreds across the country. Following his mother’s encouragement to pursue a degree in law, George graduated from Bradley University and the University of Illinois Law School. He worked as a paralegal before heading to serve in the Marine Corps, working with the Provost Marshal in the Judge Advocate General’s office.

Following his military service, George returned to a successful career in racing and became the first and largest importer of Australian and New Zealand Standardbreds. He then acquired and syndicated five world champion record-holding stallions. By flying them between the United States, Australia and New Zealand, he promoted a year-round breeding schedule for the stallions.

George credited his widow, DeDe, for supporting him in the racehorse business and for drawing him into the Quarter Horse world. George and DeDe purchased the AQHA stallion These Irons Are Hot and began a successful breeding business. The couple became involved in the Shaklee Corporation in 1981, and George served as national presidential master coordinator for many years.

“It was an honor and privilege to serve and participate in the NSBA,” he once said. “I thoroughly enjoyed watching the expansion and growth of the association.”
