Exhibitors Like NSBA Day at the Buckeye Classic

A change in the show schedule for NSBA futurity class exhibitors has been well received at the 2015 Buckeye Classic, taking place this week at Eden Park Equestrian Center in Sunbury, OH. “Our entries are up, and the exhibitors tell us they like having the futurity classes separated out, so they can show their young horses in Green or other classes on the other days,” said Kristin Martin, first vice president of the Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association, which along with Buckeye Western Horse Association hosts the event. Wednesday found 11 NSBA $1,000 added classes including a new Walk Trot Western Pleasure added in 2015.

Judges for the futurity classes included Robin Frid, Larry Hansch, Rhonda Replogle and Nancy Sue Ryan.

Karen Hornick rode A Certain Vino to the first win of the day in the $1,000 Added Open Western Pleasure Maturity for Lee Reeve. Although she often rides young futurity horses, Hornick considers showing ‘Vino’ “like coming home.” “After riding the young ones, it makes me really appreciate him,” she said. “You just put him in drive and go. I keep thanking him every time I get to show him.”

Doodle Jump earned two NSBA bronze trophies on the day, with owner Jenna Jacobs in the $1,000 Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle Maturity against 10 entries, and with Heidi Piper in the saddle to win the $1,000 Added Open Hunter Under Saddle Maturity. “He was so good today,” said Jacobs. “He was really floaty, and really threw his front leg out there and felt like he didn’t touch the ground.”
