No. 1 Baylor Equestrian stays perfect against No. 6 Texas A&M

THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – The No. 1 Baylor equestrian team (10-0) extended its perfect season against No. 6 Texas A&M (5-4) Saturday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The Bears took the 11-8 victory on Senior Day in their last home meet of the season.

Baylor started strong with a 4-1 defeat of the Aggies in fences. After a 2-2 tie in reining, the Bears led 6-3. Texas A&M took flat 3-2, but Baylor finished with a 3-2 win in horsemanship to win the meet.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Sam Schaefer’s score of 84 won MOP honors in fences, taking down Texas A&M rider Marlena Parker’s score of 76. In her last home meet, Schaefer contributed two points by also winning a point in flat.

• Parris Rice earned MOP honors for Baylor in horsemanship with a score of 77, taking down Texas A&M rider Kaci Fisher’s score of 74.5.

• Savannah Jenkins won her matchup in flat as well as in fences, contributing two points to Baylor.

• Parris Rice won two points for the Bears by winning points in both horsemanship and in reining.

“That was probably one of our closer matchups. It came down to a nail biter, but the girls really rode well. I was pleased with the way the girls rode and I was pleased with the way the horses went. The day wasn’t very conducive to riding because it was so windy and things were blowing and the horses were kind of freaking out about it. But I think we really stepped up with some of our western riders. In horsemanship, the riders did an excellent job with the last go and the pressure on. Parris [Rice] got a 77 and Sam [Schaefer] won both her points, so seniors really stepped it up for senior day. Gillian [Chant] won both her points as well, so that was exciting. I’m thrilled that they can win and end up on top. It’s been great having them here for the last four years, but now we’ve got to hit the road. I think it’s good to have a close one because now they know that they need to step it up and make it happen. But A&M always brings their A-game against us. So it’s not that they made mistakes—we just outrode them, which is what you have to do to win.”
