A Trip Down All-Around Amateur Lane

It’s halfway through Amateur Week at the 2014 AQHA World Championship Show, which means we’re in the heat of the Farnam All-Around Amateur race. The coveted award goes to the top amateur exhibitor and horse who earn the most points during the AQHA World Show in the amateur division. But the award is more than just a title; AQHA Corporate Partner Farnam presents $15,000 to the winner, and the winner also receives $1,000 in Farnam product, a WeatherBeeta blanket and an original Lisa Perry bronze.

Any amateur nationally qualifying, entering and showing one horse in a minimum of three events in two categories is automatically eligible for the Farnam All-Around Amateur award. An amateur may exhibit more than one horse; however, points earned with each horse will be compiled separately.

The Farnam All-Around Amateur Award is based on placings in each class. All-Around Amateur contenders who place in the top 10 of each class will be awarded two sets of points. Contenders placing in the top 10 in a class will receive 10 points for first place and so forth down the line through 10th place. Additional points awarded are based on the number of entries shown in the class according to the points chart list in Rule SHW261, the point distribution system used to calculate AQHA points found in the AQHA Official Handbook of Rules and Regulations.

The award was first won by Lu Ann Paul of Garrettsville, Ohio, and Melody Zipper in 1983. The most recent Farnam All-Around Amateur was Meghan O’Malley of Suffolk, Virginia, riding A Chanceof Blueskies to the $15,000 check in 2013.
