Several Congress Champions Named on a Busy Tuesday

On a day filled with futurity go-rounds, Limited division finals and AQHA events, Tuesday at the Congress was a busy day for horse show exhibitors. NSBA events kicked off in the afternoon with the Limited division finals of the Maturity Non-Pro Western Pleasure Stakes, with champions also named in the $10,000 Limited Horse, Limited Rider Open Western Pleasure and the Congress Maturity Limited Open Hunter Under Saddle Maturity. AQHA and NSBA champions were also determined in Junior Hunter Under Saddle, Senior Hunter Under Saddle and Senior Western Pleasure.

Susan Roberts and Only A Breeze took the win in a competitive class of Maturity horses. “I wanted to watch the first go of the Two Year Old Open Western Pleasure, but when I got back to the stalls, they told me I had a half hour before my class, so we were a little rushed,” Roberts said.

“The good thing is that ‘Abby’ is pretty mellow. She showed really well. She is just so consistent and reliable, and she just has a lot of flow.”

Roberts noted that she plans to keep showing the five-year-old mare and just have fun with her. “She really likes her job as a Western Pleasure horse,” she said. “We’re looking forward to not showing her quite as hard, and to raising a few embryo babies with her.”

A catch ride for Aaron Moses led to his first ever Congress championship. The assistant trainer with Gil Galyean Quarter Horses rode Cool Lookin Machine to win the $10,000 Limited Horse Limited Rider Open Western Pleasure.

The six-year-old mare, by A Good Machine and out of Cool Lookin Lady, has been with trainer Casey Willis since she was two. “She just has a lot of heart,” Willis said of the mare. “She has a lot of self carriage and a ton of personality,” added Blair Townsend. “Aaron did a fabulous job showing her.”

In the last futurity class of the night, Rosie Sheffer and Willys On The Green became repeat winners of the Congress Maturity Limited Open Hunter Under Saddle for owner Katerina Mendel.
