Repeat Champions and New Congress Queen Highlight Sunday at the Congress

A chilly but sunny day brought repeat Congress champions, a new Congress Queen and the culmination of the National Youth Activity Team Tournament on Sunday at the All American Quarter Horse Congress.

Sharnai Thompson dashed off to make the first of four show wardrobe changes after winning the Limited division of the Three Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure Futurity with Rock County Kid Sunday morning. She quickly changed to show in Hunter attire in the second go of the Two Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle Saddles second go, back to Western clothing competing in the preliminary go of the Two Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure Stakes, back to Hunt clothing for the finals of the Two Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle Stakes Limited finals and back to Western attire for the Two Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure Stakes Limited finals.

Needless to say, Thompson didn’t have time to talk about her class win Sunday morning, so her trainer, Rusty Green, shared his thoughts on her victory. “Her go in the Three Year Old class was really pretty,” said Green. “She shows him really well, and they get along so well. He’s a special horse.”

In the Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle Stakes Limited Division finals, Tami Thurston became a back-to-back winner of the class, this time aboard Good Will Huntin, whom she showed for Kathy Corrigan Frank. She won the same class in 2013 on Best In The Moonlite for owner Linda Jacobs.

“I was really not expecting to come back and win it again this year,” Thurston said. “I figured I had my turn last year. But I was fortunate to be able to come back with a really nice horse again this year.”

Thurston describes ‘Jimmy’ as a dynamic horse. “He’s so beautiful and he has the legs to go with it,” she said. “He’s a neat horse. I’ve got to work with him on and off this summer and just got to show him a handful of times. Shane Pope trained him, and it’s been a great partnership. We will be showing him in the three-year-old events next year. He has a bright future ahead.”
