Region One Scholarship Show Wraps Up

Thanks to its August 14-17 show, AQHA’s Region One is more than halfway to its goal of a $100,000 scholarship fund.

The first AQHA Region One Scholarship Show wrapped up August 17 in Monroe, Washington. The show, which started August 14, featured multiple fundraisers, all hosted with the purpose to meet the goal of a $100,000 scholarship fund for youth members from AQHA’s Region One. 

“It’s hard to believe that a dream that was started at a July 2012 board meeting became a reality in such a short time,” said Lisa Gardner, the show manager for the Region One Scholarship Show. “The AQHA Regional One Scholarship Show was the brainchild of AQHA Professional Horsewoman May Edwards, but the concept quickly became a team effort. A committee was formed in July 2012 to research the creation of a scholarship show for the youth members of the Washington State Quarter Horse Association. Within a year, it became a much larger mission, and by July 2013, the WSQHA board of directors had voted and agreed to create a $100,000 scholarship fund for the youth in AQHA’s Region One. 

“One component of the scholarship fund was to raise monies in conjunction with a show. With WSQHA willing to take on the monetary end of producing a show, the AQHA affiliates of Oregon and Alaska quickly joined in to support the efforts.” 

As things snowballed, Alaska, Oregon and Washington agreed to donate more than $4,500 directly to the Region One Scholarship Fund, Lisa noted, which got the American Quarter Horse Foundation endowment off the ground.
