A Powerful Producing Pedigree: PR Tells A Tale

It is difficult, if not impossible, to predict which stallions will be successful sires. A long-time AQHA leading breeder advises that “when you are making mating selections, that ‘you are breeding to the whole family, not just the individual’.” We find the truth in this statement as it relates to the pedigree of PR Tells A Tale. His pedigree is packed with performers and producers plus siblings and it is EXCITING to see the genetics develop impressive individuals in his young offspring. So, who is PR Tells A Tale and how did he come about? It’s a great story!
In the early days, Judy Pryor built her horse business by buying and selling horses that she and her mother found at horse sales. One day at a sale in Iowa, she fell in love with a filly that ended up changing her life and her destiny with horses. She convinced her mother to loan her the money to purchase Just Esprit, and home they went.
Just Esprit was by the great Deck Of Stars and out of a Poco bred mare, and with Judy doing all the riding and training herself, the team amassed quite a show record: over 230 Western Pleasure points and two Top 15 finishes at both the Congress and AQHA World Show.
Judy, now well entrenched with showing and producing exceptional Western Pleasure horses, credits her experience with Just Esprit as the start of developing the Deck Of Stars dynasty. Having such success with Just Esprit caused Judy to seek out and buy other Deck Of Stars offspring, and ultimately the stallion himself. Which eventually leads us to PR Tells A Tale!
Just Esprit had earned Judy’s heart, and she sought just the right cross when it came time to breed her. She chose Cuiton, whom she had stood as a stallion and showed. “He was such a slow correct mover, he needed little riding,” Judy claims. The stallion was an AQHA Reserve World Champion in Two Year Old Western Pleasure at the time.
But what about Cuiton’s pedigree? History is important, as the performance proves the bloodlines. His full brother was Triples Crown Jewel, sire of two AQHA World Champions that same year, one World Champion in Western and the other in English. Triples Crown Jewel also sired Java Mon, an AQHA Supreme Champion.
We continue back with Cuiton and Triples Crown Jewel’s sire Triples, a two time AQHA World Champion in the Two Year Old Western Pleasure and Junior Western Pleasure. Triples’ sire Triples Image was a great sire of winners, and his name is seen in many pedigrees of today’s outstanding performers. On the maternal side we additionally see the great mares Simon Moser and Buckeye Bar Gab, AQHA World Champion Amateur Western Pleasure and a leading dam in NSBA producing several top NSBA earners.
Judy knew that in Cuiton that she had found a horse with fantastic conformation for form to function with a performance record to back it up. The cross of Just Esprit and Cuiton produced PR Tells A Tales’ dam, Cute N Spree.
On the sire side for PR Tells A Tale is Vested Assets, the full brother to AQHA World Champion Junior Western Pleasure, Reserve World Champion Senior Western Pleasure and earner of 195 points Britney Pine. Vested Assets other full siblings include: Lopin So Pine, Congress Champion Amateur Western Pleasure with 125 points; Vested Peaches with 112 AQHA points; and top performer Georgia Sweet Pine with 66 AQHA points.
And who can forget the late, great, Vested Pine? Vested Pine, the paternal grandsire to PR Tells A Tale, was Congress Champion Maturity Western Pleasure, earned 104.5 AQHA points including Halter, and an AQHA Equi-Stat Leading Sire. His offspring need little introduction! Some of the most noted include Invest N Vital Signs, who is currently the highest money earning Western Pleasure stallion of all time; Vested Faith, NSBA Hall Of Fame and AQHA World Champion and Reserve World Champion; Vested Wishes, Congress Reserve Champion; and the list goes on.
We continue back into PR Tells A Tale’s lines by mentioning all-time greats such as The Invester, Zippo Pat Bars, Zippos Bay Lady, Zippo Pine Bar, Investment Asset, The Big Investment and Zippo Jack Bar. Needless to say, most of this pedigree are Hall of Fame, World, Reserve World, Congress or Reserve Champions!
But what about PR Tells A Tale? Not all great horses get the opportunity to be able to prove their worth in the show ring, some need to find other ways to greatness. Circumstances for Judy dictated that her young stock would not have the opportunity to train, haul and show. So for Judy, the next best thing is to let the genetics prove themselves through the offspring. She has decided to let the offspring write the legacy for PR Tells A Tale.
Standing at DeGraff Stables in Midway, Kentucky, Robin DeGraff says, “We welcomed long-time and top AQHA breeder Judy Pryor and her home-bred PR Tells A Tale to DeGraff Stables.” While un-shown, PR Tells A Tale exudes a pedigree full of World Champions and World Champion producers. Robin states, “we have found PR Tells A Tale to be a great minded young horse, with extreme talent as a mover. I love to watch him in the round pen and out in the pasture. He is very correct and has plenty of bone and depth. I believe this will help breed soundness into the offspring and produce compatible and competitive performers. Our goal is to help him achieve his breeding potential through his foals that show.”
She continues, “We have crossed him on both western and hunt seat bred mares and have several young foals that we feel will be productive individuals.”
PR Tells A Tale is homozygous for the Agouti factor, which means that he will produce a bay; i.e., black points such as black tips on ears, black manes, black tails and black on the legs. Agouti for bay works unless he is bred to a homozygous red mare. In that instance, he will not produce bay.
