Book Corral Features Nation’s Top Authors at 2012 Western States Horse Expo

Sacramento, CA – May 22, 2012 – The Western States Horse Expo is pleased to announce that it will be featuring its annual Book Corral, which includes the nation’s top equestrian authors for readers of all ages. In addition to the excellent selection of clinics and featured events, attendees can enjoy a trip through the book corral to meet some of their favorite authors and learn about the latest great reads in equestrian literature. The Western States Horse Expo is scheduled for June 8-10, 2012 at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento, CA, and the Nutrena Booth will be accepting hay samples each day.

This year’s authors and books will include:

Kate Chenery Tweedy: An author, editor, teacher, lawyer and the daughter of Penny Chenery, who owned and raced the immortal Thoroughbred legend, Secretariat. Secretariat’s Meadow: The Land, The Family, The Legend will be Tweedy’s third book. Her enthralling presentations embrace the themes of family loyalty, love of the land and like horse racing itself, overcoming long odds and possessing an indomitable will to win.

Denise Lee Branco:  The founder of Strolling Hills Publishing and author of Horse at the Corner Post: Our Divine Journey, which won a silver medal in the 2011 Living Now Book Awards (animals/pets/livestock category). This true story chronicles one woman’s journey to reunite with her childhood horse, driven by a dream and an unbreakable bond.

Debbie Overman: The author of All Seasons Slow Cooker Recipes for Horselovers, Overman’s is a first of its kind. This cookbook is filled with easy to use slow cooker recipes for horse lovers that can be prepared in 15 minutes or less.  This allows a rider to put together a nutritious healthy meal that will cook while they are in the barn, out on a trail ride, or even at a show, giving them more time with the horses, and less time in the kitchen.

Terri Hallman: The owner and manager of Little Feather Ranch LLC in Eagle, Idaho, has been riding and training horses since she was a young girl living in California. With an emphasis on safety, the message in the book The Horse, Your Journey, The Gift, A Youth’s Guide to Horsemanship and DVD, is to bring the horse and rider together, in a wonderful journey for a lifetime.

Dr. Robert M. Miller: Retired from his veterinary practice in 1987 in order to devote his full time to the teaching of equine behavior and to support the revolution in horsemanship that began in the Western United States in the late 20th Century, and is now a worldwide phenomenon. His latest book is The Passion For Horses & Artistic Talent: An Unrecognized Connection.

Jennifer Walker: Has published two books in the Green Meadow Series: Bubba Goes National and Bubba to the Rescue, plus a short story companion to the series called Leslie and the Lion. She has two more started for the series, as well as several other books in various stages of planning and completion. Her short stories earned their place in the first-ever Accentuate Writers Anthology, Elements of the Soul, by placing first and second place in monthly contests. She also has a story in the anthology The Ultimate Horse Lover.

Alton Pryor: The author of Cowboys: The End of the Trail, Pryor gained an intense interest in California history after selling a number of short 500-word articles on Southern California history. In his research of these stories, he kept running across other stories that interested him, but did not fit the particular publication for whom he was then writing. He began collecting both facts and ideas as he researched, and finally turned them into his first book, Little Known Tales in California History.

Elizabeth Kaye McCall: An author and journalist, her book The Tao of Horses: Exploring How Horses Guide Us on Our Spiritual Path shows how horses transform the way we see the world, interact with our environment, and handle challenges. Elizabeth worked as the horse industry liaison for the acclaimed equestrian spectacle CAVALIA on its inaugural North American tour.

Terri Farley: The best selling author of the Phantom Stallion and Wild Horse Island series for HarperCollins. Her contemporary Celtic fantasy Seven Tears Into The Sea was nominated as a YALSA best book. Her books take place in three parts of the rugged West: the rangeland of Nevada, the rain forests and volcanic landscape of Hawaii and the mysterious coast of Northern California.

Leigh Goodison: The author of The Secret Lives of Horse Trailers: A Handbook, Goodies from the Great White North, a recipe book/cooking memoir, and produces DVD’s and videos on horse trailer repair. Her articles on horses and horse trailers have appeared in Western Horsemen, Northwest Horse Source and Northwest Rider, to name just a few. Her fiction and nonfiction have appeared in literary magazines and newspapers across North America since 1980.

Suzanne Morgan Williams: A city girl who grew up riding double behind her older cousins on their horses in the Central Valley. Now a full-time author who lives in Nevada, her novel, Bull Rider, tells 14-year-old ranch kid, Cam O’Mara’s, story. When his older brother returns from Iraq with a serious war injury, Cam trades his skateboard for a bull rope and falls back on his family and their Western traditions to make sense out of the changes in his world and to help his big brother.

Naida West: Inspired by Miwok and gold-rush artifacts on her historic ranch along the Cosumnes River, West quit teaching college and lobbying in Sacramento to write full time. Now her historical novels, California Gold Trilogy, have brought to life the early days of California’s gold country for readers all over the U.S. and England. She will also present Murder on the Middle Fork, set in the wilderness of 1917 Idaho, the state where she was born and raised.

Sloane Milstein: Founded College Riding 101 after completing her fourth season as an NCAA Division I, Varsity Equestrian and IHSA Coach and Assistant Athletic Director for Sacred Heart University. She is the author of the High School Equestrian’s Guide to College Riding, and is currently working on a doctorate at Southern Connecticut State University in Educational Leadership.

William A. Luckey: The author of Five Cent Return, Belinda E Perry, decided to shed her artificial identity, as the use of a male pseudonym made sense, as the audience for westerns was decidedly male. Whether traditional or contemporary, the stories involve ordinary people who take on the tragedies and joys of an independent life. The humor in Luckey/Perry’s books is sly and subdued; more often it is found in absurd situations or brief comments.

Carrie Aenk: Owns the Silver Star Ranch with The Shepherd’s Way Animal Rescue – specializing in equine rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing. Her book, Angels in Horsehair, helps readers follow a horse where no man can tread, through the minefield of anguish that surrounds a child’s soul. From a dying horse to an emotionally crushed child and back, a torrent of love revives their barren places.

Jim Masterson: An Equine Massage Therapist for equine clientele competing in FEI World Cup, Pan American and World Games competitions and for the 2006 through 2010 United States Endurance Teams, and for members of both the USET Singles Driving Team and USET Jumping Teams.   In 2008, he developed a Certification Course for therapists who wanted to integrate the Masterson Method™ of Integrated Equine Performance Bodywork™ into their practice.  Now, Masterson has a new book out, Beyond Horse Massage and a companion DVD of the same name.

Katherine Thompson: For 15 years, Thompson has been consistently consulting and assisting people with their emotional and physical problems with their animals, and regularly conducts workshops throughout the United States, drawing on her experience as a professional horsewoman and healer. She is the author of the successful book When Doves Cried, and Horses Wept.

Marvin Pierce: Deeply involved with cow dogs, Pierce started raising and training them at first just for himself, and then later, as cattle people he knew saw what his dogs could do, he began raising them to sell and using them to gather cattle for other cattle owners. He is now the author of Marvin and His Cow Dogs: True Stories by Marvin Pierce.

Over the past 13 years, Horse Expo Events has established the Western States Horse Expo as the gold standard of equine events.  The 2012 Western States Horse Expo takes center stage from June 8-10, 2012 at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento, CA.
