Fire at CSU Equine Reproduction Lab

Though no horses or people were injured, Tuesday’s fire destroying CSU’s Equine Reproduction Laboratory was a severe blow to the university’s Department of Biomedical Sciences.

But its department head said the fire is nothing from which staff can’t recover.

“It’s going to be a setback, no doubt about it,” said Biomedical Sciences Department Head Colin Clay. “It’s facilities; it’s equipment. It’s stuff we can rebuild.”

The blaze was reported in the lab at 1 a.m. Tuesday at the CSU Foothills Campus. When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting 20 feet out of the roof, said Poudre Fire Authority spokesman Patrick Love.

The blaze, which Love estimated may have caused between $9 million and $12 million in damages, almost completely destroyed the building but caused no danger to either people or animals, he said. Faculty and staff were on hand during the fire to evacuate between 20 to 30 horses from nearby buildings as a precaution.
